Portugal Visa and Entry Requirements
To enter Portugal, you need to present your visa, passport, and other relevant documents,
unless you are from a country that has a visa liberalization agreement with the European
Union. Citizens whose governments have a visa liberalization agreement with the European
Union can enter Portugal without having a visa. However, from the end of 2022, they will
need to have an ETIAS (Europe Travel Information and Authorization System) before entering
Portugal and the rest of the Schengen zone.
The ETIAS is only available for short-term stay and has a validity of 3 years, or till
the expiration of your passport, whichever comes first. Holders can stay in Portugal
and the Schengen zone for a maximum of 3 months every 180 days. Other Portuguese visas
exist, such as short-term visas, long-term visas, study visas, and Schengen visas, among
others. The Schengen visa is particularly interesting because it can serve as a short-term
visa for visitors who come for tourism and business. It is faster to obtain and also
cheaper.
When applying for a visa, personal documents and travel documents would be required
of you. They reveal your identity and tell of your mission to Portugal and the Schengen
zone. If your papers fall short of the requirements, your application will be denied
entrance.
